Kinsale is located about 25km south of Cork city. Kinsale is one of the most historic places in Ireland, and was the site for the battle of Kinsale back in 1601.

The battle was fought between the combined Irish and Spanish forces and the English army, and this was a turning point in Irish history. The harbour is guarded by two star shaped fortresses built in the seventeenth century, Charles Fort and James Fort.

Charles Fort (pictured left) is probably the most famous and has five bastions, The two largest which overlook the estuary, were for defending the harbour, and three facing inland.

The ancillary facilities and barracks were within the walls to assist the Fort's Garrison. James Fort is across the other side of the harbour from Charles Fort and they both guided the entrance to the harbour.

KInsale nestles between the shoreline and the hills and has changed very little in several hundred years. It is one of the most popular and picturesque places to visit in Ireland. It is also popular for sea angling ,Yachting and boat trips for dolphin and whale watching. Known as the Gourmet capital of Ireland, with a large choice of top class restaurants.

There are three golf courses in Kinsale including the world famous Old Head golf course. The course was opened in 1997 and has become one of the most popular courses in the golfing world. The 18 hole diamond shaped course includes nine holes played along the cliff tops, and each hole provides spectacular views of the Atlantic ocean. If you are lucky enough to play a round of golf at the Old Head, it would be an unforgettable experience.
