Chilling out with high definition TV and a few friends

Sometimes there can be nothing more enjoyable that just lounging around for the weekend with a few good friends, watching your favourite comedy series or the latest action thrillers from the hire shop. If you want to make a party of it and invite more people, then hiring some bean-filled furniture could be a good idea. Light enough to move around and comfortable to sit in for long periods at a time, they retain the coolness of the old bean bag but with more support for your body. Everyone can relax and enjoy the main feature, without having to lie around on the floor, with all the aches and pains that can result from that. A good DVD player can keep the party going all weekend, with some models allowing you to join in with karaoke singing, as well as watching films. Bean-filled furniture is great for both outdoor and indoor use, so if the weather is good, the party can easily spill over into the garden. If you fancy watching a big sporting event with friends and family, then they can stop arguments about who sits where, as there will be somewhere for everybody. If you want to see a late night boxing match with friends the next day then a DVD recorder can make this very easy. If you prefer to watch it live, then why not hire a few loungers as well, in case it is not as riveting as you had hoped and you doze off in the small hours.

Size matters

What size room you have will have a big effect on the size of screen that you choose when you buy a new model. Although it can be tempting to get the largest one you can afford, this sometimes leads to regrets down the line when your pride and joy is delivered to your house. Apart from any problems you may have in physically manoeuvring your new appliance into place, in a smaller room it might not have the desired effect. A big TV is nice to watch an exciting cup final on, but a fifty inch plasma screen is going to look somewhat out of place in a small flat. It is best to measure the available space before you go to choose a new unit, to make sure it will fit, and to give you an idea of what it will look like in the position you have in mind. Other considerations include where your nearest electrical socket is and where your aerial socket or cable connection is, if you have one. A small TV can be perfect for your bedroom or study, if you work from home, and comes with a similar picture quality that's available on larger models. If you have many guests staying, they will appreciate being able to watch films in the bedroom and you can put a couple of comfortable loungers in there for extra sleeping capacity. Whichever size you decide on, you will find that high definition TV adds an extra dimension to your viewing.

Modern technology

If you are still using a standard definition model then you will find that an up to date appliance will enable you to start taking advantage of other accessories that have come on to the market in the last few years. Some of the latest disc players need an HDMI interface to get the best out of them, which your new model should have. Using these and the better definition available, your television can double up as a large monitor for your computer. Older models tend to produce a fuzzy image as they do not have the definition to cope with the signal. If you do not use a desktop machine, then this can be a particularly useful feature as you can simply plug your laptop in and watch films straight from it or use it to play games in even more detail. You do not need to go to the expense of buying a separate monitor, and when you are not using it for this purpose it is a simple matter to switch back to watching ordinary broadcasts. Their more compact size makes them easier to move around the house, too. Older models required some heavy lifting when you wanted to relocate them, whereas a modern LCD TV is surprisingly light and takes up much less space, depth-wise. As more and more programmes are broadcast in the newer format, many more people are finding that they want to experience the better picture quality that it provides.

Putting a new shine on old films

One of the things that used to make people hesitate when thinking about buying a newer model was all the films and recordings they had already accumulated which used standard definition. None of these would be improved by buying a new television, so they held back. This all changed with the advent of the upscaling DVD player, which basically takes standard definition recordings and scales them up to give you high definition playback. This is excellent news for people with a large collection of older material who were thinking they would have to replace it all, as many did with CDs when their vinyl record collection became redundant. This means that you can enjoy all your old favourites if you have your friends round for your own film festival. As long as you make sure you have hired enough chairs, then everyone should be happy. You can provide a separate "chill-out area" with some Zen loungers scattered around in a quiet room if you like. Then people whose eyes have begun to turn square can take a break and have a chat before seeing what is on next. Older family members will also appreciate being able to see some of the films from their youth in HD TV quality. It makes a nice change when a new innovation does not instantly consign a large amount of history to the rubbish bin. Regular programmes are also a pleasant surprise when seen in high quality for the first time.
